Water Lovers Watch List

Water Lovers Watch List, a list of movie and series for those with a major love of water

What is the water lovers watch list? It’s a collections of movies, documentaries, short films, YouTube series etc. that are water centered. Some are about surfing, others are about conservation and some are just about beautiful connections to water! With June 8th having been World Oceans Day, I figured now was a perfect time to share the first list!

A Plastic Ocean (Netflix)

I think by now we all know that plastic is a major threat to our worlds waters... but if you don’t, or you don’t know the extent of the damage being done I highly urge you (I may go as far as to say I beg you) to give this documentary a watch. If you don’t quite understand the impact that plastic has on our planet or you just need a little reminder as to why it’s so important to reduce our plastic consumption this documentary will definitely help you! I like to think that I’m someone who is pretty aware of the earths plastic problem, I’ve been lucky enough (not sure lucky is really the right word...) to see the impact in a handful of different places. With that being said I still found A Plastic Ocean incredibly eye opening and learned so much! Did you know that even plastic that is BPA free still has chemicals that are incredibly harmful to our health?

Behind the tide (Amazon Prime)

This fun little surf film is a surf movie focusing on the art of surf. It’s not just showcasing the shredders, but also the shapers, the artists and photographers. Watching Behind the Tide makes me want to give shaping a board a go... brb gotta go talk to my dad about setting up a shaping bay at the warehouse.

Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable (Netflix)

SO SO SO GOOD. If you need a little reminder that you can really do anything (I know it sounds cheesy) this is the documentary for you! Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable tells the story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack when she was 13 years old. Bethany surly didn’t let her shark attack keep her from surfing, she still is one of the best and charges some massive waves! If Bethany can paddle into Jaws with one arm, you can do incredibly hard things too! (If you aren’t familiar with surfing, Jaws is a big wave spot in Maui and when when I say it’s a big wave spot I’m talking 60 ft waves!)

“Vela” by John John Florence (Youtube)

Again…SO GOOD. Vela is cinematically beautiful. It’s a four part Youtube series chronicling a sailing trip from Oahu, Hawaii to the northern Line Islands in the Pacific Ocean. If you had to pick just one of the four episodes to watch I’d recommend the 3rd part. The whole little series makes me want to learn to sail, set off on and adventure, and just get in the ocean!
