Salty Girls Guide to Hair Care

I love playing in the water, be it the ocean or the lake. Surfing, paddle boarding, snorkeling, diving, all of them sound like the makings of an amazing day to me! My hair however, is a bit of a different story.  I wasn't blessed with naturally beachy blonde hair, but luckily I have a stylist who is great and giving me the look! My bleached, color treated locks have a little bit of a love hate relationship with salt water. A loving relationship in the sense that salt water can do wonders for my curls, but a hate relationship in the sense that with those beautiful beachy curls comes knots and tangles and super dry locks (it probably doesn't help that when I'm in full beach bum mode I tend to forget what a hairbrush is... opps, sorry Aly.) It's taken some trial and error, but I think I finally have figured out a style and products that help keep my hair happy in the ocean and free of ocean dreads.

So first up, the style. I picked up this ocean approved hair do from some fellow divers while in Madagascar. A simple braided, high pony tail is the perfect way to keep your locks from flowing in your face and prevents them from getting tangled! I found when diving or snorkeling, this do fits super well with my mask on, no pulling or tugging of my hair! I put this simply hairstyle to the test on my recent surf trip and found it is just as good for riding above the waves as it is exploring beneath them!

Now on to the products. I have found two products that make such a difference in making it so that my hair doesn't feel like the Sahara Desert after a day of sun and salt! So what are those two items? Coconut oil and a really good leave in conditioner spray! I've started to lather the ends of my hair in coconut oil before putting it up into my braid to help give it a little extra punch of moisture, I also feel like it helps a bit when it comes time to take the braid out and comb through it. Recently, I've been loving this coconut oil! A good leave in conditioner comes in handy for me post shower. I coat my hair in it before brushing through it. I use the Colour Fanatic Leave-In Hair Treatment from Pureology thanks to the recommendation of my hairstylist. I use this on a daily basis, and find it exceptionally helpful after some time spent in the water!
